“I didn’t expect it to be so different to high school”
Many students have difficulty transitioning from high school to university in their first year. It is well recognized that the whole new cultural experience of university, I need to learn a new academic discourse because writing at my university, National University of Singapore (NUS), is very different to the style of writing which I taught at my high school. One of the main problems facing first semester of my university life was learning to recognize and met my lecturers’, tutors’ and laboratory instructors’ expectations between subjects and often within subjects. I am sometimes lost in the middle of different lecturers of the same subject and also different tutors and demonstrators for tutorials and laboratory classes.
From my point of view, success in my university depends largely upon how quickly students adjust to the expectations of their lecturers, tutors and demonstrators. This adjustment skill especially links to writing skills. As we know writing is the most common medium among people. It will help assess my grasp of content of my courses. Even though lecturers, tutors and demonstrators make every effort to be consistent in requirements and assessment within subjects, it is unavoidable that there will be differences. For me, I came from a high school system where I had individual teachers for each subject and also the time and opportunity to know each of the teachers and their requirements. During my high school life, I always received continuous feedback from my teachers while this is not available at NUS.
During my first semester of university, I realized that when I write a technical essay, it is necessary for me to know both everyday ‘street’ and technical terminology. If I do not know how to write a particular issue, I normally consult my classmates or seniors. As a last resort, I make an appointment with respective lecturers or tutors. This is where I can get good advices and extra sources for my writings. For future improvement, I will try to attend all my lectures and tutorials classes without skipping them. If I don’t understand or am unclear about a particular issue, I will try to clarify with respective lecturers and tutors immediately.
In summary, I am more conscious of differences between writing tasks at university and my high school at the end of first semester. The main differences relate to structure or genre of writing material and knowledge of specific subject matter. As a future engineer, I hope to learn hard to master good technical writing so that I can communicate well with my colleagues. At last, it is also necessary to understand my writings for those who do not have engineering knowledge.

Three of my common grammar mistakes (e-portfolio)
I was born in Myanmar (Burma). I have been using Myanmar language since I was born. Three main common grammar mistakes of mine are omission of determiner, subject-verb agreement and error in the use of plural and singular form.
In the Myanmar grammar, the name of specific places or location like park, canteen, school and sea need not be collocated with determiners, unless those places or locations have been specified earlier, or expressed deictically. Unlike the Myanmar language, the mentioning of those places or location in English language requires a determiner, in any cases. If the expressions are not expressed deictically, it will then be expressed either with a definite article, or an indefinite article. Thus, where this research is concerned, normally, I fail to insert the article “the” or “a” in front of those places. Example: The erroneous form writes as “He works as a senior lecture at ___ National University of Singapore. The Correct form should be stated as “He works as a senior lecturer at the National University of Singapore.”English grammar, however, requires determiners for those instruments such as computer, piano and internet. Most of my grammatical mistakes in are lack of definite or indefinite articles in front of the name of the specific places and instruments mentioned above.
English grammar requires the subject and verb to agree in number: both must be singular, or both must be plural. Problems occur in the present tense because one must add an –s or –es at the end of the verb when the subjects or the entity performing the action is a singular third person: he, she or it. Other forms, do not take inflection. Example: as a singular form I must write as “He/She likes ice cream”, and a plural form must stated as “They like ice cream”. In Myanmar grammar, there is no such thing as a subject-verb agreement rule that requires inflections based on the number of the subject.
Error in the use of plural and singular form is another major grammar mistake in most of my essays. The fact that verb ‘be’ has more distinct forms with respect to person, number, and tense than any other verb in English. The verb ‘be’ has three distinct present tense and two past tense forms. Example: Wrong form writes as “My mother hobbies is cooking and reading.” The correct form should be stated as “My mother’s hobbies are cooking and reading.” Sometimes, I tend to use the incorrect forms in place of correct ones.
One of my English teacher’s suggestions is that I can overcome the chances of occurrence of these errors by looking into development of learning materials such as the good grammar book (Oxford University Press).

Summaryof roundtable discussions (e-porfolio 5)
There was a round table discussions on the 9th of March; it was happened during the tutorial. On that day, four groups presented their views on different topics. The first group touched on Bio-fuel or biomass productions, the second group focused on Green Chemistry, the third group discussed on Microchip implantation inside the human body, last but not least, the fourth group was on carbon filter technology. Everyone had their own point of views and it was a quite interesting day. Overall every one of us believes that it is good to have a roundtable discussion, so that we can share our opinions among friends. The following three paragraphs will be focused on second, third and fourth groups roundtable discussions.
“Green Chemistry” was the selected topic for the second group. People from supporting side managed to show their supporting views and gave reasons why they accept the idea of green chemistry. Global warming and green house gaseous emissions are becoming hot issue among nations. A set of technology called green chemistry will help to reduce the emission of green house gaseous. What I had learned from that roundtable discussion was that green chemistry is based on a number of principles that ensure that both processes and end products are clean and safe. It is also known as both the chemistry of the future and the chemistry of today. The major advantage is that ‘green’ processes are often cheaper than conventional methods. Indeed the basic ideas of green chemistry are to prevent production of hazardous and polluting materials. On the other hand, the opponent side clearly stated that Singapore is not ready to take part in green chemistry industries due to the limitation of land use and other factors. They suggested that country such as China will be the best place to start with green chemistry.
The third group focused on implantation of microchip inside human body. The point of views from supporting side was clear and precise. The main purpose of implanting microchip is that medical workers can immediately gain access to an ill or injured person’s medical history regardless of location or condition. Moreover, a small chip will carry the personal information of a particular person. So it could reduce the chances of information theft. Supporting side also mentioned that the latest result of implantation of chip to animals showed improvements. However, there are some possible problems that need to consider carefully before adopting such kind of technology. There are several reasons people are against that set of technology. Privacy is the major concern among some group of people. Government or some particular organization can easily track of individual movements. The studies showed there is the higher chance of getting cancer after implantation of microchip.
The last group discussed on the carbon filter technology. It was rather an interesting topic. It is a set of technology that can remove contaminants from air, gas or liquid streams. By installing a small side carbon filter at the top of a factory’s chimney, the filter will efficiently removes even low levels of contaminant to a high level of purity. In fact the filter gives rise to a strong force of attraction for gaseous or liquid molecules. Despise all those advantages; there are some doubts about the ability of carbon filter technology. There is no solid evident of both physically and chemically in order to give enhanced performance across a wide range of particular applications.
Those are my understanding of roundtable discussion for other three groups. At the end of roundtable discussions, I can conclude that every technology has their own good and bad sides. This is our duty to research on those technologies and come out with the solutions. With our creations, we can make the world clean and green.

Summary of two articles related to group roundtable discussion
The first article gives general information about Bio-fuel or Biomass. Recently biomass or bio-fuel production has become hot topic on the discussion table among the nations. After the world was shocked by the shortening of the fossil fuel, people start looking for the alternative energy sources. Moreover, old fashioned petroleum fuel produces higher percentage of carbon dioxide emission to atmosphere. In fact biomass will contribute to the reducing of greenhouse gas emission to atmosphere. Bio-fuel is the set of technologies which can easily produce fuel from the crops.
Bio-fuel can be defined as solid, liquid and gaseous fuel. Man have been using solid type of fuels ever since fired was discovered. Over the last few decades, the invention of liquid and gaseous fuel gives hope for the alternative energy to the fossil fuel. Bio-fuel can be categorized into three generations which are first, second and third generations.
Under first generation, it can be sub-group into three main types such as biodiesel (liquid fuel), bio-gas (gaseous fuel) and woods (solid fuel). First generation bio-fuel is made from food crops which is becoming big issue over the world food crisis. Second generation includes cellulosic bio-fuel from non food crops. In the past few year production of bio-fuel has become sensitive issue among the world leaders.
Every technology has advantages and disadvantages, so bio-fuel has its own good and bad sides. According to the second article, bio-fuel production is doing exactly opposite of what its intended; it is dramatically accelerating global warming. The booming of bio-fuel has long worried over land use across the globe. Every year thousands of acres of forest are cutting down due to the increased in demand of crops for fuel production. In fact it will lead to the destruction of the world’s greatest rain forests. Bio-fuel will definitely be going down because it is bringing it into conflict with food crops and biodiversity in near future. People have been talking about efficiency of third generation fuel which comes from algae, but a fear among environmentalists is how it would affect the marine life. In the article it clearly shows that burning the vegetable oil will produce more nitrogen dioxide than burning the fossil fuel. Nitrogen dioxide (NOx) is adverse effect on the respiratory system. The emission of NOx is 10% to 15% higher than fossil fuel. It is an extraordinary number. One of the major disadvantages is the transportation and storage problems with biomass especially in colder climates. It does not flow well at low temperatures which cause undesirable for use at colder regions. Moreover, biomass cannot be transported in pipelines. It will increase the cost if the biomass has to be transported by truck or rail.
Despite a few benefits such as reduce carbon dioxide emission; it would take time for bio-fuel to be readily accessible. It will take many months to grow crops which are treated to convert into fuel form. Compared to other renewable energies, bio-fuel has more disadvantages. In fact studies show that solar energy has higher efficiency of 50 to 100 times greater than bio-fuel. Recently, the cost of living rising in line with food shortages in various parts of the world; increasing bio-fuel production is likely to make the problem worse.
Five words/phrases:
-Greenhouse gas: any of the gases whose absorption of solar radiation is responsible for the greenhouse effect (eg. Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide)
-Alternative energy: energy, as solar, wind, or nuclear energy, that can replace or supplement traditional fossil-fuel sources.
-Global warming: an increase in the earth’s average atmospheric temperature.
-Boom: to progress, grow.
-Biodiversity: diversity among and within plant and animal species in an environment.

Summarizes the main points of lecture on 30 January.
The main purpose of this lecture is to think about reducing atmospheric emissions of Carbon dioxide (CO2) from human activities. The reason of this lecture is to evaluate the current state of basic fact regarding the technical, scientific, environmental and economic which are all effect potential climate changes.
Professor Palmer hightlighted on some of the key main factors between carbon dioxide emission and major climate changes. Electric power plants, automobile engines and furnances are major units of producing CO2 into the atmosphere. For example: the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil are large point sources of CO2. On the other hand, the burning of forests during land clearance will effect on the world climate changes.
In near future, scientists will be able to come out with new technology which can be able to capture and store excess carbon dioxide gas from the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide capture and storage involves the use of technology, first to collect and concentrate the CO2 produced in industrial building sectors. Then, transport CO2 to a suitable storage location such as deep blue ocean and outer space. This will help to lower down the emissions of greenhouse gases.
Other technological options were also discussed and pointed out step by step. They are: Option (1) reducing energy demand by using energy efficient electrical devices; Option (2) switching fuel supply from coal to gas or other alternative energy sources.
Second speaker, Dr. Sowacool, touched on government policies and its impact on global warming. One of the major porblems is politicians tend to work short term, at this moment there is no strong policies which can give sufficient protection for emission of greenhouse gases.
There are good and bad reasons for developing new technologies. In these days, companies increase the standard of their products by increasing energy efficiency. Renewable energy is one of the key factors in efficient energy consumption. On the other hands, more and more people are dashing for gas as for the source of new energy supply. Due to high cost of gas and other environmental issues, deindustrialization occurs in some countries.
At last, Associate professor Bala brought out some important fact and solutions for global warming. Firstly, human population have to be controlled. Foods, water and natural resources are limited. Meanwhile, building environmental friendly houses will benefit to the earth.
In the end, The two methods of carbon dioxide capture and storage are interesting. The global warming will stop, only if these new technologies can be implemented successfully.

An Inconvenient Truth
What are existing or possible roles of environmental and special interest groups in contributing to or solving global warming?
Global warming is a global problem not local problem. The only way to solve this problem is to lower down the carbon dioxide (CO2) level in the atmosphere. According to the reliable data, the amount of CO2 level is increasing significantly for the past few years. This is the major deal for all human kinds in this world.
The earth atmosphere is covered with thin vulnerable ozone layer. The term global warming occurs when the sun radiation comes in and warms the earth, most of them trap inside the earth due to green house gases. In the past, scientists foresee the danger of green house effect and warned the possibilities of outcomes, but people fail to react on those warnings. It is human nature to take time to response. As the result, there were a lot of Hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons hit and cost billion dollars damages. Floods, drought and forest fire are also occurring around the world. Human activities this will lead to significant climate change to this century.
There are several factors that environmental and special interest groups can make the best of it before the nature is going crazy. First and foremost, coal consumption should be controlled. It is not an easy job but perusing the governments will be more effective. To make the world better place, fuel efficiency has to be reserved by switching to alternative energy sources (bio-fuel, solar, nuclear, wind turbines). New technologies can replace gasoline vehicles to renewable power or electric vehicles. On the other hand, electric cars are quieter and cleaner to operate. This is a duty of environmental interest groups to pursue the follow citizens by switching alternative energy used machines. For long term effect, the world population has to be controlled. Human population is increasing rapidly for the past few years. As for the result, foods, water and natural resources are in high demand.
New strategies to be developed to reduce harmful effects. Nowadays, people are more and more aware of environmental friendly houses. A good engineer will design houses with energy efficient windows and install compact fluorescent light bulbs. On the contrary, it is a responsibility for a good citizen to reduce garbage by recycling or buy products form, companies that are trying to reduce their impact on climate.
In conclusion, this is time to speak up about the global warming and wake up everyone to take part in this event. The only chance to secure the future is doing the right things and move forward. Appropriate actions need to be taken urgently.

The Expanding World of Engineers
The word “Engineer” is essential for all nations. As for engineers, they do not only build buildings or design tools; also take part in health care researches and other important sectors such as security management in banking. Trained to apply principles of science and mathematics, engineers employ technical solutions to economic problems. They have duties to fulfil societal and consumer needs. The bridge between scientific discoveries and commercial applications are engineers’ responsibility.
In today’s world, the fields of engineering are expanding. There are several factors to take consideration before developing new products. Many engineers face all kind of difficulties during developing new technologies. For example, when the engineers design and build a generator, they precisely specify the functional requirements. This is called the brain storming stage. A good engineer will clarify all the requirements during the storming stage. Make sure that all the requisites are listed out before going for next stage. The finalize design should satisfy the design’s overall effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety. Finally, the perfect generators are ready to use and it will meet consumer needs.
In additional to design, engineers carry out testing and problem solving. They supervise for the whole production as well as determine the causes of failure. One of the most important steps in manufacturing is maintain quality of the products. They also need to manage the time and cost of their projects.. Engineers are responsible for the whole projects.
In conclusion, engineers should be creative, innovative and detail oriented. They also have abilities to associate with teams and able to express their belief. Communication ability is one of the key factors in engineering. Engineers should master in oral as well as in writing. It is true to say that “an engineer’s training helps to systematically analyze complex information and apply a holistic (systematic) approach in designing solutions”.
